HTC trophy Smartphone running Windows 7 7-ComputerActive.co.uk

The major smartphone operating systems are from Apple, (used on the iPhone) and Android, used by several manufacturers.

HTC made many Android phones, but it also makes the phones, using the new operating system Microsoft Windows phone 7.

We were impressed by the previous phones large screens and elegant design and a new trophy phone is also impressive.

The trophy is a good Smartphone, with beautiful bright and clear 3.8in pane. Pictures and videos looked impressive. Thanks to the Microsoft-specific minimum requirements for phones, Windows 7 is quick, can cope with even the most demanding of tasks.

However, while it looked great and was easy to use, some options too are hidden away and change the settings is difficult. Also, he is unable to connect to a hidden wireless networks: Microsoft thinking is that the hidden networks are less secure, but for those who must use them is a large gap.

Otherwise, Windows phone 7 is a very good mobile operating system. The icons on the screen at home shall be regularly updated with new photos, social network updates, appointments, and e-mail, which makes it easier to follow what is happening. HTC hub is also a welcome addition to the connection with applications for checking the time, play online games and watching videos on Youtube.

Software that Windows phone 7 uses to connect to the computer is called the Zune and not unfortunately is very good. We found irritating and fiddly to navigate – Microsoft is jazzed but has sacrificed an substance for style.

Five-megapixel camera is excellent. The pictures are crisp with well defined colors and auto-focus lens is very fast, even when taking photos of objects quite close-by. Flash may be poor, however, makes pictures in low light conditions seems very washed-out.

There are also 8 GB of storage, it connects with Bluetooth devices and has a GPS receiver for navigation with the aid of preinstalled Bing maps application.

HTC trophy 7 is capable phone with a large screen and an excellent camera. Comprehensive, this is one of the best smartphones, we have seen.

Software users get to choose the best of both worlds-GulfNews

Dubai: don't believe everything you read about tech camps siding only with both proprietary software (PS) or open source software (OSS), says Harvard Business School professor.

Dr. Josh Lerner, co-author of a new book, Comingled Code, said on a scale of growing companies, Governments and educational institutions are both forms of private mix and free public software to their needs, nixing the idea that there is one winner takes everything in the software industry.

Lerner, who co-authored the book with Mark Schankerman, said: "standard dichotomy between PS and OSS is exaggerated and misleading", and that both forms are increasingly being used in an evolving society to get the job done.

"While they are different, each has strengths and weaknesses, but it's not like it's oil and vinegar that they are diametrically opposed," said Lerner.

"We have a research done in 15 countries of 2000 software developers and 2000 users consisting of non-profit, Governments and businesses. We found that there was a very striking overlap on the user and producer side. "

After the survey data crunching, Lerner said one of the things that stood out was "co-mingling was going on here."

The big reason for mixing, he said, is that very often proprietary software that is greatly limited by big corporate giants such as Microsoft does not cover all of the user, who then free open source software can use to fill in the gaps.

Increased market share

Users are much more pragmatic about these days for all their bases, then stick to only one form of licensed software, he said.

Open source software is enjoying more of a market share as known versions of free software such as Mozilla Firefox Web browser against license private Web browsers, such as Windows Explorer compete.

Another good example of a growing open source presence is the Android operating system on mobile phones compared to the heavily limited proprietary versions used by Apple on the iPhone or Blackberry phones by Research in Motion.

A study conducted in 2008 by the Standish Group, for example, showed even then that open source software was making serious inroads as free software for all to enjoy and in relation to the proprietary software sold by computer software giant.

At the time of the release companies the Standish Group Chairman Jim Johnson said open source software cost proprietary software large bundles of cash. "It's the ultimate in disruptive technology, and although it is only 6% of [a] estimated 1 trillion that the budgeted annually, constitutes a real loss of 60 billion dollars [Dh220.34 billion] in annual revenues to software companies," Johnson said.

Open source software was started in 1984 by the Free Software Foundation's general public license system where anyone can perform free open source software, and make changes in the redistribution of copies for wide public use renewed, as long as there are no restrictions on user launched.

In Lerner's recent survey of countries around the world he learned that there is a "tremendous growth in open source activity in time" has been.

National trends

Statistical figures from the survey results suggested that 26.8% of the respondents were using both proprietary and open source software, while 67.3 percent average said they only proprietary software used and 5.9 percent said that they only open source exclusively used.

Turkey scored highest in the survey of mixed-use category with 43.9 percent of respondents say they use both forms, while Singapore respondents lowest scored for mixed use with only 10 percent say that they are both used.

Not surprising then that Singapore respondents the highest users (87.7 percent) of proprietary software only.

The country that the highest rate of open source report only was Brazil with 12.9 percent.

At the end of the day said Lerner that anyone involved in the world of high-stakes international computing must accept that both forms of private and free public open source software here to stay ... together.

He compared the existence of both animals that live in a forest. "Just as singers and falcons in the eco-system, there is both co-habitation and competition between OSS and PS," Lerner said. "We need policies that both live together and to facilitate competition."

The EU will force the social network sites to improve privacy-The Guardian

The European Union is to dock a "right to be forgotten online" to ensure that potential employers among others, can not find the old Facebook party photos of someone wearing nothing else than a Lampshade.

In a speech to the European Parliament EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding, warned companies such as Facebook as: "an American-based social networking company, which has millions of active users in Europe must comply with the EU's rules."

In a package of proposals to be unveiled before the summer, the Commissioner intends to force Facebook and other social networking sites to make the high standards of data protection is the default setting and provide control over the data back to the user.

"I would like to expressly clarify that people have the right – and not only the possibility – to withdraw their consent to data treatment," said Reding. "The burden of proof should be on the controller – those who process your personal data. They must prove that they need to keep the data, rather than people having to prove that collect their data are not necessary. "

Under the proposals, will be established national privacy watchdogs powers to investigate and initiate legal proceedings against companies with services that target the EU consumers.

Reding spokesman, Matthew Newman, said: "a year ago, she issued a warning because Facebook personal settings changed for the worse and now she legislature to put meat on those bones."

Facebook profiles has since January last year been available by default. Users have to opt in to ensure that their photographs and other information can be viewed only by friends.

Newman said companies "cannot believe they are exempt from, just because they have their servers in California or doing their data processing in Bangalore. If the target EU citizens, they must obey the rules. "

Personal settings are often so complex that a typical user does not know how to use them, said Reding's staff. The new legislation would ensure privacy is built-in and not stapled on later as an added extra. The rules would also outlaw hidden collection of data without the user explicitly gives permission.

Newman said that the legislation would the EU first jurisdiction to deliver a "right to be forgotten".

"Perhaps you've been to a party, until four in the morning and you or someone you know posts photos of you," he said. "Well, it is a harmless little fun, but not to delete this may threaten your job, or access to future employment."

The rules that would give consumers a specific right to withdraw your consent to share their data. "And after you have withdrawn their consent, even should not be a ghost of your data left in some server somewhere. It is your data and it should have gone for good, "he said.

Facebook believes it is already compliant with the EU acquis and to say that it works in conjunction with Brussels officials in the revision of the legislation on data protection, which was adopted in 1995, in the early days of the Internet.

"Facebook is fully engaged in the debates around the revision of the EU data protection directive," said a company spokeswoman, Sophy silver. "We work closely with the data protection authorities across the EU and the European Commission and Parliament.

Silver said Facebook users already could remove their data completely from the view, and then it took a couple of weeks to clean up in the company's servers.
