The Open Stack cloud computing platform, supported by Rackspace, NASA, Cisco, Dell and others, ramps up commercial support options for cloud and enterprise users.
The Open Stack open source cloud computing project is not just for hobbyists and bleeding-edge developers more.
Open Stack started as a joint effort between Rackspace and NASA in July 2010. The project has now been extended to more than 40 partners and commercial support services now in an effort to help grow is gearing production implementations.
"Since we started we've seen a ton of momentum, but one thing, which we have heard is that while people love open source software, they really some want behind the Open Stack," said Mark Collier, vice president of marketing and business development at Rackspace InternetNews.com.
Another item that is sometimes a problem with open source software adoption is legal compensation as part of an engagement services or support. Collier was uncertain as to whether or not Rackspace would be any form of compensation for the Open Stack.
That said, Rackspace is only one part of the ecosystem of the commercial services around Open Stack.
"From the point of view of software we create no software distributions, we work with partners such as Canonical and Citrix software distributions that will bring," said Collier. "What we do is more to the services, in terms of helping people get setup with operational support, unlike traditional software support which will be dealt with by the people build the software distributions."
