SecureDoc for Lenovo manages full-disk encryption-eWeek

If sensitive data must travel with a laptop on the staff of the new Lenovo, Lenovo for the administration of SecureDoc full-disk encryption tool for self-encrypting hard drives helps ensure the security of the data without placing undue burden on the central leadership.

WinMagic's SecureDoc with Lenovo to provide Lenovo, which offers also for computers equipped with drive encryption without the traditional, offering migration bridge for organizations with the transition to the mobile data security encryption managed software.

Remember, but data so sensitive, that allow the significant user and IT management efforts should be evaluated against other conditions methods including cloud storage in costs, the actual effectiveness and suitability for commercial users.

If it is decided to send a regulated or highly sensitive data on the road, SecureDoc for Lenovo combo has proved to be strictly controlled, user-friendly hardware and software package. SecureDoc disk encryption in addition to, you can also encrypt data on removable media, including USB drives, CD or DVD. Before a chance to log on to Windows, forced me to perform authentication, SecureDoc pre-boot access to the system.

I tested the SecureDoc for Lenovo ThinkPad T410 system equipped with Seagate Momentus thin, 250 GB, self-encrypting your hard disk. The laptop came with Windows 7 Professional with SecureDoc Lenovo preinstalled. The first thing I noticed was that the password supplied with the system passwords, all caps. When I log on, the caps lock key failed. If the shift key and the password you entered, it worked. With this type of pre-boot environment software, I wasn't surprised by the t this behavior, but it's worth, the configuration load, security systems, which are building for the priority before the OS.

I was translating the Kaspersky antivirus tool to see how the tools which are known to conflict with other products, which changes the startup process affected SecureDoc Lenovo. I was able to use Kaspersky Antivirus 2011 SecureDoc beside without problems. Both products run correctly and not interfere with each other when the computer starts.

During my tests I was able to two-factor authentication, including the integrated fingerprint reader on the Lenovo T410. By using the fingerprint reader process transparent to users, which means that the requirement of fingerprint appeared as part of the logon process, not the SecureDoc as a different step.

While the SecureDoc for Lenovo can be implemented with minimum impact on the productivity of the users, the product has a sophisticated and extensive set of configuration options. Administrator console covers drive encryption, key management and execution control and provides optional tools for control, USB ports, an external media encryption, audit logging and extensive control over the user interface.

SecureDoc in action

SecureDoc is using two weeks on the eWEEK Labs as a universal notebook and as client VMware view (VDI-Virtual Desktop infrastructure) test. The only time I noticed the tool was at the time of boot-up. In all other cases, the SecureDoc for interface for managing Lenovo was out of sight. When you start a remote desktop session in our tests, VDI, or during the processing of the normal workload of the Office, I noticed no impact on performance.

Setting the finer aspects of SecureDoc Lenovo was relatively simple. The user interface is an easy transition, it should only support security administrators to decide how to perform the SecureDoc Lenovo functions, so that data is protected in accordance with the needs of the organizations, and users avoid unnecessary for their work.

Seagate Momentus drive and SecureDoc for Lenovo are oriented for whole disk encryption, it is possible to restrict the encryption of files and folders by using the product. I was able to selectively encrypt data at rest on a test system to reduce the load on the system for processing.

For compliance and reporting, you can use the SecureDoc for monitoring the disk access. For example, I was able to lock USB drives that were attached to the test system. Locking limits the ability of the user to encrypt or decrypt data on the USB disk, ensure that the data copied to USB stick could be audited to ensure that it wasn't t to an unsecured location.

I was also able to monitor the disks in the system so that I was informed, when an attempt was made to access. The system allowed me to log the activity of basic writing to disk, including the monitoring of who made a change to a file and the sector, which has been changed. SecureDoc for Lenovo can also be used to block entry to the USB drive and other units, as defined in the policy.
